[San Diego CA] I’m obsessed with this band. They were billed to me (by who???/what???) as cholo-goth – I mean that was enough … but they really deliver. It’s like a magic concoction of everything I grew up with, all cooled up. This band is fiercely good. Fiercely interesting. I was Very Excited to be at this show but didn’t really know what to expect in terms of crowd etc, esp in Portland. Turns out he’s basically a one-man band. The stage had two guys on it- I think as props, guys with big muscle. Everything about the lead singer says he’s a tortured character – his social media posts are about his wife and romantic life - but he’d probably prefer I not speak of him that way haha. The stage had weird battle things – the horns of party crews? I don’t think of this band as rap but that was the forefront live – and it sort of sounded like he was rapping over recorded tracks. There was some annoying shout rap. Ultimately it all works for me and he’s a philsopoher: “I walk in the shadows just to be seen” “Death is the place where freedom is kept” “My life’s a black rainbow” “From dog to god I’m alone in this world” “Music is the only things that’s never let me down” The more I get of him the more desperate I am to know more. He sort of reminds me of CholoFitCreeper because he’s busting stereotypes of what a cholo is – albeit much less humorously. The stage set for “Gothic is the summer” made me cry (pictures of kids) (or fighting). There was a lot of Mexican pride that I didn’t expect. I love this band.
