Front Country - I-Bar Ranch, Gunnison CO - July 30, 2013

[San Francisco, CA] The best part of this show was the venue – we bicycled up a long dirt road alongside cows in the pasture and with a slew of other Gunnisonites traveling by bicycle, car, foot. It’s a ranch with a long history in Gunnison as both a working ranch and an events center – old-timey feel. The crowd was a lot more diverse than the usual townie crowd we see in businesses in “downtown” Gunnison. They were grilling up burgers and corn on the cob– just the right mix of a BBQ of friends and a well-ran business (the owner passed out chips for free drinks when the lines became long and irritating). Front Country was a mandolin, 2 guitars, upright bass, banjo fiddle. They mostly played picked up bluegrass with some modern bluegrass rock and country thrown in. The only woman in the band, the lead vocalist, has a nice rich deep voice. They did a lot of instrumental songs, including “Rock, Salt, and Nails” (Rockboy knows it from Waylon). They kind of shamefully said they were going to do an 80s cover (I was excited) – Bruce Hornsby’s “That’s Just the Way It Is” is a good song but not what I’d consider an “80s cover.” They won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The mandolin player was in a band that was nominated for a Grammy. I think one of the guys said he plays with the Del McCoury Band?
