Jabo, the Texas Prince of Zydeco, and No Complaint Band and D.J. Mouton - The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club, Houston, TX - July 7, 2013
[Houston] I loved this place instantly – it was
like walking into a little slice of New Orleans.
The band consisted of a hyper
accordion/lead singer, a stand-up drummer, a bass guitarist, and a guitarist
and a washboard player in porkpie/panama hats. A woman who appeared to be the
band manager passed out cards advertising a future show, held a band meeting
and what looked to be a band prayer session. They started with a
straightforward zydeco number, segued into a medley of classic soul songs
(fantastic voice), and then did a song that was some mix of zydeco, ska, and
rock. The old ladies were competing for the attentions of the old guy in the
cowboy hat with smooth hips and fast feet – men who want to keep themselves in
ladies would do well to learn to dance. All the ladies were doing their best to
avoid the guy who danced like he was having a zydeco-inspired seizure. It was
all very exciting. (Photo courtesy of Amazon)
