[Lafayette,
CO] Gunnison’s Main St. was lined 2-4 cars thick. Cars of all stripes, from as
far back as the 1920s, and as recent as the 1980s. The oldest and youngest were
the best – although, ElPrimoHaole and especially Rockboy found the more recent
‘classics’ somewhat unkosher. A smooth-walking late-middle-aged lady emerged
from a pink Cadillac to collect a Lee Iacocca award for her collection of old
cars in Grand Junction. Most of the crowd liked her for her blonde hair and
tight jeans – I liked her because she knew more about cars than most of the
guys there. And then a rockabilly/borderline-psychobillly band smack dab in the
middle of Main St! They were old cats, but good cats. Actually really good. Rockboy
was nearly beside himself, as deprived as he has been of his beloved. Per
Rockboy: their first bass player was Taz from Reverend Horton Heat; their best
song is “Hippy Dance,” which only confirmed this band for Rockboy because he’d
already discovered this strange habit of Colorado-ans through his own
observations of Gunnisonites. “If you haven't noticed, This ain't the Grateful
Dead, Our hair is nice and short, No acid's in our head - And if you're gonna
ask us, If we can play some Phish, You have to go to somewhere else to hear
that gibberish. --- Please don't do that hippie dance, When we're about to rock,
You freak out all the cats. You'll send 'em into shock, You'll upset the band.” (Photo courtesy: https://www.musicpage.com/hillbillyhellcats)
