Hellbound Glory - The Last Chance, Gunnison, CO - October 13, 2013

[Reno, NV] They were a lot more polished than the opening band but somehow less interesting. Lots of guys with a 70s southern rock look splashed with heroin chic, particularly the washboard player. The other very interesting band member was an Ethan Hawke look-a-like with a Munsters posture. Tattoos all over the place. I liked their kind of demented carnival vibe. Lots of guitars, drums, and a cleaner-cut-looking lead singer. Spaghetti was also on guitar in the band, and spoke more often than fitting a back-up guitarist, but the man clearly needs to be in the spotlight as much as possible (of note, his guitar strap had a ‘01’ a la Dukes of Hazzard – and someone else had “Hank” suspenders). Their sound ranged from old-timey country to country rock to gospel, all with a hard rock edge, but overall there was something of an Irish singer/songwriter core (their lead singer) to their sound which just bored me. It was also during this show that I started to realize that the crowd was frightening, and that it’s nice to know enough people in Gunnison well enough to start observing the human dramas that will eventually annoy me.
