[Gunnison,
CO] I swear Kevin, the Brewery’s brewer, transported from chatting up a table
at the Brewery to playing the bass in the space of 5 minutes. I’d heard a lot
about this local band but had never seen them – they’re good. They’re not
really bluegrass and I’m not sure why they feel the need to say they are… Using
traditional instruments in a rootsy way doesn’t make you bluegrass, and I most
definitely mean that as a compliment. After this trifecta of bands, I became
convinced bands around here say they’re bluegrass to increase their chance of
gigs. Or worse, I’ve heard so much bluegrass over the last couple years, I’ve
started to make distinctions between bluegrass bands. So they were a drum,
banjo & guitar – I’d call them rock jazz. We walked in when they were doing
a cover of Prince’s 1999. They also covered Dead or Alive’s “Spin Me Round” and
the Faces’ (w/ Rod Stewart) “Ooh La La.”
