[Portland, OR] Lovely
little blonde woman in short red sequined dress singing and playing guitar.
Backed by bass guitar, drums, electric guitar, and two backup singers in black
dresses. She was alt-country at first but ended up having a variety of sounds.
The entire set was covers (country, yacht rock, Hall and Oates, John Denver) –
which pisses me off – but I became obsessed with her. There was something Twins
Peaksian about her – the two spindly trees ‘blowing’ towards each other behind
them on the stage added to this impression. She strikes this crazy enchanting
balance: exquisite innocence on the verge of empowerment. She was perfectly
minimalist – loungey – Mark Kozelek. One backup singer was wracked with stage
fright and singing terribly – Annalisa and the crowd soothed her by going crazy
over her average harmonica solo – damned Portland niceness. The electric
bassist added this nice watery backfill. “Annalisa Tornfelt is well known as
the vocalist and fiddle player for Black Prairie, the dark folk-bluegrass band
she joined in 2007, with Jon Neufeld and four-fifths of the Decemberists” [photo credit: http://annalisatornfelt.com/1121-opening-for-shook-twins/]
