Shook Twins - Revolution Hall, Portland OR - November 21, 2015

[Portland, OR] Flame has been going on about these girls, plays them a lot, and I had decided I hated them. Maybe even more after we ran into one of them, Flame told her he loves their music, and she was a little snooty in her long blonde hair and velvet bodysuit. So I wanted to hate them but they’re charming – they hang pictures of their friends’ butts in their bathroom – it’s possible I was jealous of them. They’re awfully charming – funny and interesting and vibrant – and they have that weird twin synergy where they talk in sync. I mean the snootiness is there – they talk in the cutesy whispery way cool-hippy-Pacific-Northwestern girls do. And then they’re also great musicians – a unique sound. Moody indie folk. This guy with them that took lead vocals sometimes (Neko?) had a voice that was a dead ringer for Greg Dulli. They head banged to their second song. They lyrics weren’t complicated but seemed like they were meant to be meaningful. A song about robot love – atypical folk focus. They each play lots of instruments –t he one twin would do weirdly pleasant things with her voice – kind of a mild yodeling. They are groovy and have style. Introduced one song: “I was in a relationship that looked really promising in the beginning. This is about the bginning.” The singing style got only a touch repetitive.
