[Los
Angeles] This band was hideous – we were all silently suffering, me at least
trying not to bring my cousin down by telling him I didn’t know what the hell
kind of show he had taken me to. Plus the venue was crazy packed – we at least
had escaped the over 21 drinking half of the floor, which was unbearably packed
– but it was still packed. So the band was some generic pop rock sound – Flame
and Todd#1 kept hearing 90s sounds, stuff like Cherry Poppin Daddies or those
swing rock bands – I didn’t hear it but they had the consensus. They were well
staffed with all sorts of horns, guitars, drums. The person who really took
them down was the crimson-haired, leather-legged woman they plopped in the
middle to sex the band up – her singing and gyrations were so rock-star
calculated it was painful to watch. They kept telling me the band was from LA
but I kept insisting they were one of those producer-formed bands out of
Nashville - I don’t know why I was resisting because LA makes plenty of sense
too. No Depression’s description of country, soul & R&B sounds about right
to me.
