[Hawaii – near ElPrimoHaole’s country
I think] Well they were delightful – two soft-spoken men fingering guitars very
deftly. They told charming little NPR style stories between songs. ClassyUncle
was delighted with himself – we had paid a lot to come, by we, I mean me. But I
couldn’t escape the fact that they sounded like muzak which got me to thinking
how exactly talented are muzak performers? Because it turned out these guys had
won a Grammy! They played a song for the big film The Descendants – they also
had a song in a major TV show. So then I got to thinking how we divide the line
between average mellow classic guitar and superior mellow classic guitar. They
were jazz really. I can see how they were influenced by Hawaii. Flame was all
over hearing depths in their music – ‘oh this is an exciting one’ (it wasn’t) –
‘ahh, that sounded like a wave!’ And Flame discovered that one of the guys was
really a pidgin-speaking roughian Hawaiian, in an awesome way. ClassyUncle
knows them, awesomely, because he stays at one of their houses when he visits
Hawaii because the less roughian one’s wife is also in college admissions. And ClassyUncle’s
friends were surprisingly entertaining and wild. I spent the latter half
feeling moved by family, bereft that I’ve been so cold, sorry for ClassyUncle,
etc, etc. ClassyUncle has not been receptive to my renewed attentions.
