[Portland] Essentially a cover band in
a dive bar too uncool to be called a dive bar but I liked them. The bar was
full of exceedingly boring lesbians and fey men – not that I added much. The
lead singer was moderately mesmerizing – her vocalizing reminded me very much
of that super-weird 90s alt-pop band that was either from an Asian country or
borrowed from Asian styles. Her face was impassive, motionless – mouth wide
open – and I swore she stared at me the entire time. She was very adorable –
quirky in a scientist-by-day way. Her one guitar lead was not smooth – only
made her more endearing. They covered Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” a
Blondie song, some other song I couldn’t figure out… They did do some of their
own songs. Had kind of a Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, 70s punk sound too.
The monotone calmness of their approach was quite soothing – and doesn’t
encapsulate the richness and roundness of their sound.
