They blend classic violin with hip-hop and pop – they were backed by a drummer
(in large strange plastic box) and a DJ. They referenced WuTang right off – I
always thought Wu-Tang had a classical music sound. They sampled some 90s dance
like Rob Base. They were great but ultimately boring – sounded more like Paul
Simon, Bruno Mars, Seal, Gorillaz. One of those bands that are trying too hard
– and the white Portland liberals falling all over themselves to adore black
boys playing to their code of ethics was nauseating – and what about cultural
appropriation people? The best part was when they ended by calling out the
Bravo Music Orchestra (local kids) to play with them and little Luis did one of
the guy’s solos. Plus the show was way too interactive – I had to calculate in
my head how to explain to ... that I don’t enjoy
group-activity-on-demand—after all one of ..’s big disappoints in me was my
failure to dance.
