[Portland
OR] My
first impression was that the place was for kids – everyone in there was 25 or
younger – but they have like two sets of music each evening and it seems to be
a pretty diverse set of genres – plus they had a $26 burger and most were over
$15 so unlikely that only caters to kids. First, there was a black kid DJing –
mellow verison of Gramatix – pleasant. Then a white boy took over, harder hitting.
Then I guess the real show started and I started paying attention – it got real
Portland. Josh o? (yo?) and King pnszz (?)
- super white and I was annoyed they introduced the white DJ that had
preceded them but not the black kid. But it’s not like I saw a ton of rap in
Austin or that those rappers were always black. Ultimately he was an ok rapper
– reminded me of Atmosphere maybe just because he was white. He definitely
conceived of himself as an enlilghtened rapepr, dropping words like “existentialism.”
His lyrics were average and repetitive, less deep than he imagined: “I look in
the mirror and see my own reflection.” He completely forgot the end of one song
but handled it well. Then went into spoken poetry using a black lexicon.
