[Portland, OR] The lead singer though. A slim
vibrato of a man in tight teans, a belt buckle inexplicably positioned on the
side instead of the center of his hips, vibrating and gyrating for a full hour.
He’s amazing. He is the band. He fashioned the mic cord into a noose to bring
home the message of a dark song. For unknown reasons, he brought to mind
Depeche Mode. But then there’s Music&Duck’s favorite: a blonde firebomb
organist. They also had two guitarists, a basist, and a drummer. Powerful sound
– The Sonics for sure. I felt really conflicted deciphering their sound –
garage psych? garage punk? garage dance? The dirtbag to the right of us (he
would embrace this title) in shaggy hair and wire-rimmed glasses was so excited
by the garage-psych songs, he was getting low Lil Jon style. I think I need
updated versions of garage music – like the song about “seasons” that got all
spooky-psych and excited all the old hippies was a little too cliché for me. They’re
better than The Doors. I was also distracted by the smell of pizza – I’d been
starving for a week, particularly for pizza.
