[Los Angeles, CA] He
was introduced as Top Dawg’s next Big Act from LA. Music&Ducks was telling
me how Kendrick Lamar, who just won a Pulitzer Prize, endorses him. I don’t
know Kendrick Lamar well at all but vaguely remembered he’s from Compton – thus
NWA, Eazy-E – thus very good bones. They were spare minimal comfortable
melancholy. There were computer beats and keyboard melodies. Soul jazz rap
storytelling. Stoned reggae rap. D’Angelo. John Legend. There was a totally
Jay-Z-centric song. He had a wedding ring on. He commented on the ‘salt and
pepper’ crowd – I imagine it was more salt than he’s accustomed to, because
Portland. Super literate-lyrics music. I’m not going to share the lyrics I
wrote down because I can’t verify them b/c he’s too new. One of his songs was a
little more aggressive and playfuly (“I know who your baby mama really is...”).
I was pretty resistant because I really am unmoved by R&B but I was pretty
much converted by the end of his set—he’s smart, solid, and real. In the
meantime, this girl caused all sorts of havoc in the bathroom, losing a pearl
from her ring, inspiring a multi-girl hunt that resulted in the successful retrieval
of her pearl.
