Dasutt - KT&G Sangsangmadang, Seoul, South Korea - May 25, 2018

[Seoul?] Elated by band 2, I skipped back over to the elfin doorman at Club FF for my next venue recommendation. He suggested I head around the way to KT&G. Finding the building wasn’t so hard but finding the venue within the building… … turns out, this was a recommended spot for tourists so good-on my new friend. Per Lonely Planet: “Funded by Korea’s top tobacco company, this visually striking building is home to an art-house cinema, a concert space (hosting top indie bands) and galleries that focus on experimental, fringe exhibtions. There’s also a great design shop for gifts on the ground floor. The architect Bae Dae-yong called his design the “Why Butter Building” as the pattern of concrete across its glazed façade is said to resemble both butterfly wings and butter spread on toast.” So the venue was a class act—big stage, big sound system, a big room full of seats—I was forcibly encouraged to move from standing along the side wall into a seat. They were a bass guitar, guitar with vocals, and drums. It took me a bit to realize they were in uniform: sports pants with stripes down the side and t-shirts. The lead singer’s clear-rimmed glasses are what stood out to me. The band members essentially progressed, left to right, from goofy to stoner. They were math/prog pop rock, James Taylor, a funky Jack Johnson. This was my least favorite band but the venue was worth seeing. Viva Live Club Day!
