[from
Austin TX] Everything was so Austin. The bar was shitty but with upscale food.
The bartenders were gorgeous with their long locks parted in the middle – their
lack of untatooed arm skin – their metal tanks – and their glazed
disinterested eyes. The huge sprawling backyard space with picnic tables, seats
around firepits, standard tables – dogs, pot, cigarettes, beer, beer, beer. And
the band was described as “woke” outlaw country – although I take some umbrage
to the idea that outlaw country wasn’t always woke. They had a Supersuckers
look and did devolve into more tuneless rock. They were mostly a cover band –
Texas Tornadoes (“Don’t Let Me Die in Waco”) – Feddy Bender. "We’re going to
spell out gentrification, hegemony, coded racism" – and then they did. Nine months deep into a pandemic, these photos could make me cry.
