[from
Portland, OR] Turned out that 50% of the audience of 10 was the next band. I was
too entranced by the theatre-looking fellow on the side of the stage taking Instagram-worthy
pictures of his hand puppet ‘in situ’ to be distraught. Each member of this
band, as I’d observed when they were audience members, was different in exactly
the same way. They were all in baggy ill-fitting pants cropped mid-calf – got
to keep the kids keeping up. Many had a long earring in just one ear. Some walked
with an intentionally awkward nerdy gait. Another had an intentional 80s republican
nerd look, white turtleneck, jean jacket. And then they, 19 years fresh from
the womb, had the audacity to engage in lengthy sound adjustments. I entertained
myself imagining how the lead singer will eventually remove his earring and
fulfill his destiny as a banker. I’ve been enchanted and disenchanted with the
counterculture since I was 15 – I’m bored with my own lack of enchantment so
let’s get enchanted. I’d sure rather be here than the Pearl District. More to
the point, I had to shape up my attitude because they were perfect. New wave
post-punk excellence. Angly guitar. Joy. Great guitars. Goddammit.
