[from Portland OR via London] I’m writing this on May 1, 2021, literally one year since my last ‘show’ (it was a virtual show – nowadays, I delete emails advertising virtual shows with as much punch as my finger can give). This is a show I would have turned my nose up to in normal days but it’s pandemic daze. Plus it was mostly an excuse to pull our bikes out again. Plus Produce Row’s all right. This ‘band’ was Thom Lyons, from the UK, accompanied by Rose, a proper lady. They met on the internet only a few months ago (“his wife didn’t mind” he quipped) and this was their first show. I don’t even remember if there was a guitar… or a keyboard? They started with a cover of “High and Dry,” which IfIdBeenBornInIowa identified immediately, establishing her good reputation upon her first appearance in this blog. They closed with a banger (as if) - IfIdBeenBornInIowa was pointing out lyrics (I can’t hear lyrics…) … “ran out of lipstick to put on the pig” … which made me think of the show Black Mirror… and made me think it had to be another cover – maybe "The Last Song On Earth" by Adam Melchor & Emily Warren or so google tells me – they probably thought it was a witty song title to end on. Like anyone even got it Thom and Rose. The audience was rowdy, for a singer/songwriter audience, and called for an encore. We knew our days were numbered – two days til lockdown three. He Britted: “Sorry good chaps but we’ve ran out of songs!” He only said ‘chaps’ in my reimagining. I had ‘tomato’ in my notes but I don’t know if it was for this or if my grocery list merged – ohhhh, I think the nachos were so good we were dredging little bits of tomato through the last bits of cheese?
