[New Orleans, LA] My bestie from Austin, WomanInCharge, turned 50 this year and planned a birthday extravaganza in her new home city, New Orleans. Proud to say her original name from many years past of this blog still stands. Par for the course, the weekend was coordinated and busy: WomanInCharge and CameraSmoothie are master hosts, they had a wealth of pre-Mardi Gras (Carnaval?) events arranged for the group, people from different segments of their traveled life. So, come this last night of our visit, I was about done - looking forward to an evening chatting in their truly gorgeous shotgun home… when the tables turned … and I was told we were headed out to a local bar. The horror. I literally melted and dragged myself down the front stairs to express my displeasure at this unpleasant turn of events. I stalked the five blocks to this said bar. We walked in … and I was dismayed to find I was totally delighted. Hello Austin 2005. Hello interesting crowd. Hello good modern classic country. Hello joy. I abandoned my sour aging companions for the front of the stage. I located an octogenarian to two-step with, and I stayed up three more hours. The band was Roy Orbison crossed with doowop. I see now they’re on the YouTube channel Western AF, a channel I’m obsessed with, because it carries on the legacy of Townes.. because it blends contemporary punk with contemporary classic country. Get Western AFed!
