The OBGMs - Black and Loud Festival at Bossanova Ballroom, Portland OR - April 6, 2024

[Toronto, Canada] The music hit like a room of giant fans all pointed at us. Angry … but happy, smart …. but funny, tough … but tender. Every band member reminded me of NiceButStillDangerous’s emo 30 year old nephew. This band confirms the claim of my goddess Yasi, host of Bandsplain, that all contemporary bands are pop punk. But, like only bands from this generation have the audacity to do, they blended a wild amount of genres: power pop, punk, rap metal – but they did it with finesse. They give real “Jimmy’s Fantasy” energy. They’re exhiliriating. And it’s in no small part because their love for each other is evident – one band member’s middle finger is received with another’s head butt – they get in the crowd to do a group squat. And Toronto’s a respectable place for a band to be from (e.g., Godspeed You, Fucked Up, Anvil :)). As we were leaving, I got another random text from the guy I chatted with at a Black Mountain show in 2018  (“Probably don’t remember me from the black mountain show at mission theater quite a while ago just going through old papers I remember u were nice don’t have to respond”) – he texts me every couple years – strange that this text coincided with a show – was he there??? Or people are just weird.
