Club Deluxe
[from Portland OR]: Finally, a good band and we only got to see four songs before their set was done. All four had variations of mullets and variations of plumber or chimney sweep clothing. We were struck by the curly telephone-cord guitar cable in aqua blue. The blonde White boy lead sang with a sort of yokel tonality. Super tight rambunctious power pop. Some art punk. Some Creedence Clearwater cohesion and joy. “Ramble Tamble” slurred & punked up. A drum solo followed by a keyboard breakdown. We went to the back to sit for a bit before the walk back to the cars. We asked to share the table of a serious White man and a chipper White woman. She chirped at us that she loves LA but recently left it for Portland because she fell in love. I told her it was refreshing to hear someone loving on LA. She chattered that she finds activities for her and her boyfriend to do, they don’t do them all but she was sure glad they made it to this one. She chirped that she went to UT Austin for her RTF degree (radio television film) so I asked her if she knows CameraSmoothie. No. The boyfriend finally returned – he looked a little familiar. They chattered on that they’d met on a shoot on the Oregon coast so I asked the boyfriend if he knows CameraSmoothie – and I knew he did even before I finished the question and I knew that I knew him. We shed some tears for our beloved far away buddy – bickered over who knows him best and texted our photo on over. Boyfriend wore a The Dirty Nil t-shirt, a power pop band from Canada he told us.
