[from Portland OR]: I was excited about this band because they were described as spaghetti western… Ennio Morricone. Nope. Exquisitely boring. They were garbed like Black Angels from Austin – everyone in sunglasses and ‘Western’ shirts. But The Black Angels are such a better band. The lead singer had a deep voice reminiscent of Ian from Joy Division. He dueted with the woman on keyboards, kind of like X. There was a touch of Nick Cave. Lucky for them, a fan behind me said they were sounding nothing like their instrumental stuff, which is way more spaghetti western – and that they usually have a horn section. Finally there was a song that had some western pick-up and the keyboardist pulled out a French horn. Ooo, google tells me: “Spearheaded by longtime Brian Jonestown Massacre bassist Collin Hegna.” My favorite Portland band, Roselit Bone, that now lives in New Orleans, does spaghetti western a lot better. IfIdBeenBornInIowa got determined to be featured and launched into commentary: she heard the Eurythmics in every song and she hates Annie Lennox (I think this was meant to incite me but she can hate Annie Lennox if she wants)… it’s hard to watch like pro football (she lost me)… dark, disturbing and haunting like Quentin Tarantino & Johnny Cash… Devotchka (spot on, IfIdBeenBornInIowa!) We walked away to explore the bizarre bazarre as they launched into a song “the sky above and the earth below” that I’m positive was a cover.
